My
first time on stage
I was born down on the form in Arkansas.
We were share croppers so there was nothing to do but
pick cotton, enjoy the countryside and the family.
My mom taught the kids how to read and write from the
time we were born so I only spent 4 days in the first grade,
they moved me to the second grade and that gave me a
head start in life.
My first time on stage was a dare by the teacher, she
caught me playing the Harmonica when she returned to the
room unexpectedly, she told that if i did not play for the
school play that was to be held in a few days that she was
going to take my harmonica away.
The horrible thing that happened on stage was this. They
introduced another harmonica player just before me, T his
guy sounded so wonderful that the crowd went wild, when
he finished, I was an amateur so when I was introduced, I
only played about 40 seconds, by the time the applause
died down for the first guy, I was finished, that made the
whole audience start laughing at me, so I, without any
shame i took my bow and walked off the stage.
That was my first experience on stage and from that time
on I have been hooked on entertainment.
Another funny thing
I was singing gospel music around 1986 when I just
happened to stop by a music store with my wife, the store
owner was demonstrating this little Karaoke machine when
I got to where they were standing, the owner took the mike
from the guy and handed it to me, the song that was
playing was Elvis Presley singing
(Where Could I Go But
The Lord)
I know the song so I started singing and finished
the song. The owner looked at me and said, you know, you
could make a very good living doing this?
Within a day or two I was booked with that little machine
and never looked back.
How I got discovered for country music
I had been doing gospel music for quite a while when in the
first month or two of 1988, I was asked to compete in a
contest at
Gilley's Night Club,(This
is the place where the
movie Urban Cowboy was done) I was not all that excited
about it because I was doing pretty well at what I was doing
already.
I decided to inter and on the night of the contest, my agent
and I were the first to arrive.
I was not a happy camper because the place was very cold
and I figured I'm probably going to freeze before this thing
is over.
When I signed up I had to list 3 songs, I was told that the
band leader would pick one of these songs for me to use
for the contest.
Just before my time came, the band leader came to me and
said, hey man, this is a honky-tonk and we don't know no
gospel songs, I said OK and started to leave when he
stopped me and said hey, wait a minute, we know two
songs,
I Saw The Light and Amazing Grace,
I said OK, lets
do Amazing Grace.
Now here comes the fun, I had never played with this band
before so we started out at different times, when they
started to play I had already started to sing so we all
stopped, at the same time and looked at each other, finally,
he said hey, lets all just go at the same time!
I got an applause and took my seat.
Several singers competed that night, so I just sat there
and enjoyed myself.
Then a young man come over to my table and introduced
himself as
T.J. Worth of Worth
Records,
he said that if I
would sing
country western music
that he would sign me
to
his Label, even if I did not want to sing country, he offered
to do a demo for me free of charge.
I said thanks, but you know, I had never sung in a Honky -
Tonk in my life and this was something I would have to
think about long and hard. Even though I was born around
this kind of music a had enjoyed it all my life.
Well I did sign with Mr. Worth a little later, we cut a single
promoted it, and it charted very high on the country charts.
The rest is history.
I
will be entertaining for the rest of my life.
